Ponkan & Me

Angelina Cantada is a visual storyteller.

As a television producer, director, writer and editor in the Philippines, Angelina told stories of various themes through her documentaries and reality-based TV programs. “Mental,” a stark look at the poor state of mental health facilities in the Philippines, won a silver medal in the New York Festival for TV and Film in 1999. She also co-owned and managed a production company in Manila for 8 years where she produced over 200 corporate and educational videos.

Her first film in Vancouver was “Let’s Play Boccia!” a documentary short film on the Canadian Paralympic Boccia Team. It premiered at the Vancouver Short Film Festival and won the Best Female Director award in October, 2009. Angelina was also one of 6 winners in the Crazy8s Filmmaking Competition in 2010. She wrote and directed “Sikat,” a poignant story about a Filipino nanny living in Canada. Both films have screened at different festivals in Canada.

Angelina is also a gifted photographer. With her camera and the magic of digital post, she is able to create images that are arresting, thoughtful, and always, personal.

Being a new immigrant, Angelina struggles to find her way and carve her own space here in Canada. She has always found comfort in photography and filmmaking. And with over 15 years experience in the art of image-making, Angelina knows she will always tell her stories in pictures.
